Sebastian Thomson - Organ Angels of Creation - Thomas Hewitt Jones Berceuse - David Briggs Toccata for St. David's Day - David Briggs Festival Paean - Simon Whalley Rhapsody - David Bednall Variations on Noel Nouvelet - Philip Moore Laudate - Neil Cox The 14 Stations of the Cross - John Hosking “Sebastian Thomson is to be whole–heartedly praised and admired for his vision in commissioning these new works, and for committing them to CD in performances of such intense musical intelligence and technical grasp. It has been a great privilege to have been asked to be part of this, and one can only hope that the pieces here will find new audiences and promote the creation of new music for the King of Instruments." (Dr David Bednall, Composer and Organist) “Truly stunning playing and the best organ disc I have heard recently without a doubt. It is always good to have your compositions performed by safe hands (and feet); when they’re lifted off the page and utterly transformed, it is something else altogether." (John Hosking, Organist and Composer) Available from Convivium Records Editor's Choice in "Organists' Review" |
![]() All Angels Cry Aloud Chapel Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge Ely Cathedral Girls' Choir Timothy Parsons and Alex Berry - organ Olivia Hunt - soprano Sarah MacDonald - Conductor Available from Regent Records Te Deum The Chester Service Ave Maria Missa Brevis in D Ave verum corpus The Bangor Service Requiem A Royal Blessing All scores available from Chichester Music Press John Hosking has spent his life in the organ loft (St Martin-in-the-Fields, Westminster Abbey and the cathedrals of Lincoln, Truro and, currently, St Asaph). All that practical experience has given him a deep knowledge both of what works in a liturgical setting and of the choral tradition’s rich repertoire. The ghost of Duruflé is evident in his beautiful Chester Service (with a cheeky reference to Messiaen’s La Nativité du Seigneur along the way); Herbert Howells hovers over his Bangor Service, while A Royal Blessing could be by John Rutter. Yet for all these influences Hosking maintains his own distinctive voice, particularly in his impressive Requiem. Stephen Pritchard - The Guardian |

Recorded on the organ of St. Asaph Cathedral, North Wales Available from Regent Records Variations de Concert, Op. 1 – Joseph Bonnet Variations on ‘Y Delyn Aur’ (‘The Golden Harp’) – Harold Carpenter Lumb Stocks Theme and Variations on ‘Victimae Paschali’ – Simon Jacobs Variationen und fuge über ‘Heil, unserm König heil’ (‘God Save the King’) – Max Reger Partite diverse sopra il Corale ‘Sei gegrüsset, Jesu gütig’, BWV 768 – Johann Sebastian Bach Variations on ‘Greensleeves’ – David Briggs Toccata: Marche des Rois – Pierre Cochereau Improvisation: Variations on ‘Suo Gân’ – John Hosking John Hosking stylishly and skilfully puts the versatile Wood rebuild at St Asaph through its paces in a wide ranging programme of variations. JSB rubs shoulders with Reger, contemporary composers and a former St Asaph musician with evidence of numerous shades of Cochereau from actual to ‘après’ along the way. There is also a well-constructed improvisation from Hosking himself. Instrument and player come over effectively on this disc seemingly aimed at a broad listening public, and although ‘variation overload’ is avoided, not all the music quite holds similar interest levels. As usual, the production by Regent is excellent. Alastair Johnston - Choir and Organ |
